Desklot keeps your files on your Mac: no account, no analytics, no tracking.
Last updated: October 10, 2026
Desklot is built to keep your files on your Mac. It has no account, no analytics and no tracking.
What stays on your Mac
Your files, box names, colors, settings and screenshots never leave your Mac. Copy Text and Read QR Code run on your Mac with Apple's Vision framework; images are not uploaded.
When Desklot uses the internet
- Free trial. So the 14-day trial is one per Mac, the trial starts the first time Desklot reaches our server, and Desklot sends it a pseudonymous fingerprint of your Mac: a one-way hash of its hardware identifier, salted so it only means something to Desklot. It doesn't reveal your serial number, your name or anything about you, and for the trial we never link it to your email or purchase. We keep only that fingerprint and the date your trial started, and delete it after about 13 months. We rely on our legitimate interest in preventing trial abuse; you can ask us to delete it at any time.
- License activation and checks. When you activate your license, Desklot sends your license key, your Mac's model (for example “MacBookAir10,1”, never its name) and the Desklot version to Polar. Then, and about once a week after that, it asks our server for a signed certificate that lets Desklot work offline for up to a year: it sends your license key, the activation ID and the fingerprint above, and our server confirms the license with Polar. We keep only the activation ID with that fingerprint, so a license works on the Mac that activated it, and delete it about 13 months after the last check. Polar returns the license status and the name and email it was bought with; we don't store them.
- Updates. Desklot checks a file on our website for new versions once a day. The request includes the app version and macOS version, like any web request.
- Crash reports. If Desklot crashes or freezes, it sends a report to Sentry, the service we use to find and fix bugs: what failed inside the app, the Desklot and macOS versions and your Mac's model. Before it's sent, Desklot removes file paths and names, email addresses and license keys; it never includes your files, your name, your Mac's name or how you use the app. You can turn it off in Settings › General.
- Feedback. If you choose Send Feedback, your email app opens with a short diagnostic (Desklot and macOS versions, number of displays, a few settings). You see it before sending.
Purchases
Polar, our reseller, processes your payment and keeps your order details under its own privacy policy. We see your name, email and order, which we use only to provide your license and support.
